Anglers shop for depth maps as though each app went out and surveyed the water itself. Very few did. The bathymetry underneath most fishing apps is public data, collected by government agencies and distributed openly.

What resolution actually buys you
Resolution is a published number, which makes it one of the few claims in this category you can verify. NOAA’s Coastal Relief Model was first generated at 3 arc-second resolution and later refined to 1 arc-second.
One arc-second is roughly thirty metres of ground distance. That is enough to show you a creek channel, a drop-off, the shape of a point and the edge of a flat. It is not enough to show you an individual laydown or a single brush pile. Any app promising to reveal precise cover from national bathymetry is overselling what the grid contains.

The coverage gap nobody can market their way out of
Coastal water, the Great Lakes and major reservoirs are generally well surveyed. Small inland lakes are the uneven part, and the unevenness follows survey funding rather than app quality. When your local lake shows as a blue blob with no contours, the survey usually does not exist at the resolution the app needs.
Two workarounds are worth knowing. First, check your state agency directly: agencies frequently publish contour maps and survey reports that no app has ingested. Second, some apps aggregate sonar logs contributed by users, which can fill gaps on popular water — with the same bias as any crowd data, which is that quiet water stays blank.
Age is the underrated problem
A contour map is a photograph of the bottom on the day it was surveyed. Reservoirs silt in. Rivers move. Dredging changes channels, and drawdowns expose and reshape flats. None of that is reflected until somebody surveys again.
Very few apps show you the survey date. It is a fair question to ask, and the absence of an answer is itself informative.
