What Is the Best Fishing Forecast App?

Forecast apps use one of two methods, and the difference matters more than the brand. A solunar table is astronomy: sun and moon positions calculated in advance, identical whatever the weather does. A conditions model adds live weather, pressure trend, tide and water temperature, so it changes as the week changes. Neither has been independently verified against catch records, so the honest test is not accuracy claims but method: ask which inputs the forecast uses and what it was scored against.

Two methods, wearing similar interfaces

Almost every fishing forecast on the market is one of two things, and the interfaces look alike enough that anglers rarely notice which they bought.

A solunar table is astronomy. It computes the positions of the sun and moon for your coordinates and marks major and minor periods from them. Because it depends only on celestial mechanics, it can be generated years in advance, and it produces exactly the same peak times whether the day turns out calm and bright or blowing thirty knots with a collapsing barometer.

A conditions model starts from live data — barometric pressure and its trend, wind, air and water temperature, cloud cover, tide state — and scores the hours from that. It changes when the weather changes. It can be wrong in ways a solunar table cannot, and it can be right in ways a solunar table cannot.

Neither has been independently verified against catch records. So the useful comparison is not accuracy. It is what each method is capable of knowing.

What the moon is actually worth

This is the one part of fishing forecasting with a large published dataset behind it, and the number is smaller than the marketing suggests.

Researchers analysed angling catch records for 341,959 muskellunge across North America and found that catch was strongly related to the 29-day lunar cycle, with more fish taken around the full and new moon. The predicted maximum relative effect was about 5%. In their framing: an angler fishing exclusively on the peak lunar day would, on average, catch 5% more muskellunge than an angler fishing on random days. The effect was larger for fish over 102 cm and stronger in midsummer.

The caveat the authors added is the part most articles drop. They obtained angler effort data and found that on Lake Vermilion the lunar cycle also affected how much people fished. They could therefore not conclude that the lunar effect on catch came from fish behaviour alone. Some of the moon’s apparent power is anglers deciding the moon is powerful.

Five percent is real. It is not a reason to skip a Saturday.

What the conditions side has going for it

The Escanaba Lake creel study, covering walleye and muskellunge over 2003–2015, found that light-related variables mattered measurably: time of day and mean daily solar radiation both had a positive influence on walleye angling vulnerability, along with lower air temperatures and lunar position and phase. Muskellunge trip success and catch rate responded to light metrics too.

That is the case for a conditions model over a fixed table: light and temperature vary day to day in ways astronomy cannot capture, and they show up in the data.

The same study is also the strongest argument against overrating any forecast. The variables that dominated were not environmental at all — guide status, bait type, and how much of the fish population had already been caught. Software cannot score the angler.

The ceiling nobody can raise

A conditions model inherits the accuracy of the weather forecast beneath it. NOAA is specific about what that is: a five-day forecast is right roughly 90% of the time, a seven-day forecast about 80%, and a ten-day or longer forecast about half.

There are similar honesty markers in the other data streams. NOAA generates tide predictions for more than 3,000 US locations, and those are genuinely predictable, being astronomy plus long observation. USGS river and lake gauge data is different: real-time readings are explicitly provisional and subject to revision. A forecast that renders a provisional river level as a precise input is overstating what it knows.

How we handle it, and what we will not claim

Our own forecast, BiteScore, is a conditions model rather than a table. It takes live weather, barometric pressure trend, tide state, moon phase and water temperature for a specific set of coordinates and returns an hourly 0–100 score. It uses the moon, but as one input among several rather than as the whole forecast — which is what the 5% figure argues for.

What we will not do is quote an accuracy percentage. No independent test has scored our forecast, and the page where we explain the test it would have to pass is how accurate are fishing forecast apps. Any app quoting precision without naming its test is making a claim it has not earned.

The one question to ask

Open the forecast you are considering and find out for yourself whether the score for next Tuesday changes when Tuesday’s weather forecast changes. If it does not, you have bought astronomy — useful, cheap, and worth about 5%. If it does, ask what inputs moved it, and treat any accuracy figure without a stated test as marketing.

Either way, use the forecast to choose between days, and use conditions to understand why the day looks the way it does.

  • The published effects are small. A forecast is worth using to choose between days and hours, not as a prediction that a given trip will succeed.

Is a paid forecast better than a free one?

The expensive part of a forecast is the underlying data, and much of it is public: weather from national services, tides from NOAA, river levels from USGS gauges. Paying more does not buy better physics. It may buy more inputs, a longer history or a cleaner interface, but no subscription converts an unverified score into a verified one.
